Summer Assignment #1

Portrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne
by Charles Osgood, 1840

Hi All!
We hope you're enjoying your summer so far, and we hope you're beginning to enjoy Hawthorne and his short stories!

So, what was the first story you read?

1.     Briefly summarize the plot of the story.

2.     Completely define ONE main character.   Choose one quote from the story that best typifies your character and explain why you chose it.  In describing your character, include as many traits as possible: physical, emotional, intellectual, and describe the character’s internal and external motivations as best you can.  Tell us everything you possibly can think of about that character.

3.     Please also talk about the message that Hawthorne wanted to impart to his readers; what was his purpose in writing the story??  Give examples from the story that support your point of view.  We can’t emphasize enough the importance of drafting a well-organized, grammatically correct response on a Word document.   After you have finished, please copy and paste it to the blog response.

Click on "comments" on the bottom of the page to post your response.  Where it says "Comment as:" select "Name/URL" from the drop-down menu and enter your first and last name in order to receive credit (leave URL space blank).

Your next blog response is due August 10th.

Also, do not forget you will be expected to produce your annotated copy of each of your stories on our first day back in September.  We're looking forward to reading your responses!!!
